At Heathcote, we are incredibly proud of our thriving and rapidly developing Forest School provision. With three fully qualified Forest School Leaders and an ever-evolving outdoor curriculum, Forest School is at the very heart of learning in our Early Years and Key Stage 1 classrooms.
Our children are curious explorers, and our Forest School provides the perfect setting to ignite their imagination, deepen their understanding of the world, and develop essential life skills.
Intent
Our Forest School is designed to offer children regular opportunities to achieve, develop confidence, and build resilience through hands-on learning experiences in a natural environment.
We aim to:
- Embed outdoor learning within the core of our EYFS and KS1 curriculum.
- Support children’s social and emotional development, encouraging teamwork, independence, and self-esteem.
- Foster a lifelong connection to nature and a sense of environmental responsibility.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and exciting space where children can explore, experiment, and take appropriate risks.
Implementation
Our Forest School sessions are led by three fully qualified Forest School Leaders, ensuring high-quality, safe, and meaningful experiences for every child. Each session is carefully planned to complement classroom learning and is often linked to key curriculum topics.
Children engage in a wide range of rich, outdoor learning experiences that include:
- Fire lighting and fire safety, helping children understand risk, responsibility, and teamwork.
- Tool use, such as sawing and whittling, where children learn to use real tools safely and develop fine motor skills.
- Shelter building and knot-tying, fostering resilience, problem-solving, and collaboration.
- Exploring local wildlife and habitats, enhancing scientific knowledge through real-world observation.
- Natural art, den building, and mud play, nurturing creativity and sensory development.
These skills not only build physical coordination and independence but also support children's confidence, patience, and perseverance.
Why Forest School Matters
Research shows that Forest School has wide-reaching benefits for children’s academic, physical, and mental wellbeing:
- According to the Institute for Outdoor Learning, regular outdoor learning boosts children’s concentration, motivation, and behaviour.
- A study by Natural England found that children who participate in outdoor learning show increased levels of happiness and confidence.
- The Forest School Association reports improvements in children’s communication skills, resilience, and ability to work as part of a team.
