Modern Foreign Languages

Intent

At Heathcote Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language is an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Our intention is to foster a love of language learning and an awareness of other cultures, enabling pupils to become confident, curious and respectful global citizens.

Using the Language Angels scheme of work, we deliver a carefully sequenced Spanish curriculum that develops listening, speaking, reading and writing skills progressively from Key Stage 2 onwards. We aim to build strong foundations in language acquisition that support long-term learning and prepare pupils for future language study in secondary school and beyond.

Implementation

Spanish is taught weekly in Key Stage 2 by class teachers using the Language Angels platform, which provides a structured and supportive progression of language learning. Lessons are carefully planned to align with National Curriculum expectations and are enriched with high-quality audio, interactive activities and engaging resources that bring the language to life.

The scheme ensures systematic coverage of vocabulary, grammar and phonics through clearly defined units, each revisited and built upon over time. Pupils develop their confidence and fluency through a range of activities including games, songs, conversations, role play, reading simple texts and writing short passages.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at Heathcote Primary School will have a solid foundation in Spanish and be able to communicate with increasing confidence and accuracy. They will demonstrate a growing understanding of Spanish phonics, vocabulary and grammatical structures and show enthusiasm for using the language in context.

Our children will leave primary school well-prepared for the next stage of their language learning journey, equipped not only with linguistic skills but also with a deepened cultural awareness and a positive attitude towards other languages and communities.
